We have a trust problem. For years, we’ve been told to “vote with our dollars,” but modern shopping often feels like trying to read a map in a hurricane. We stand in store aisles staring at natural boxes in specific shades of leafy green, wondering if the product actually heals the planet or if we are simply being played by a clever marketing campaign.
On this episode of EnvironMental, Aub sits down with Linda Kelly, Senior Vice President of Certification Programs at ClimeCo, to discuss how to navigate this maze and find the universal signals that actually mean something.

The Power of Third-Party Verification
The marketplace is crowded with self-proclaimed features and benefits, but Linda explains that these are never as credible as a product that has undergone a third-party certification. The ClimeCo Certified Product™ program has been in the market for nearly 18 years, ensuring that manufacturers are truly walking the walk.
Unlike general brand promises, this certification is product-level, meaning every raw material, manufacturing process, and distribution step is assessed through a rigorous Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
The “Cradle-to-Grave” Metrics
To earn a ClimeCo badge, a product’s environmental impact is measured from cradle to grave. This includes:
- Raw Materials: Assessing the percentage of sustainable content.
- Manufacturing: Gathering data on energy consumption and emissions.
- The Use Phase: Measuring the energy used by the consumer (especially in electronics).
- End of Life: Calculating the impact of final disposal or recycling.
Mainstreaming Sustainability via Retailers
The most surprising part for me is that retailers are actually stepping up to help simplify these choices. Linda notes that Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program is “pretty legit,” utilizing a scientific assessment team to evaluate third-party badges like ClimeCo’s! Call me shocked!
Other retailers like Grove Collaborative, Ulta Beauty, Target, and Walmart are also vetting certifications to provide another layer of reassurance to the consumer. It’s exciting to learn that these aren’t just big brands jumping on the bandwagon – there is a ton of work put into the certifications and you can pretty much follow it!
Ending Green Hushing
While some brands are nervous about over-claiming (ie. they’re greenhushing), Linda and I encourage those who have done the work to shout it from the rooftops. When a brand can back up their claims with authentic, third-party data, they move beyond the bubble and prove that sustainability is good business.
