Sustainability isn’t just being systemically written out of our legislation; it is being algorithmically purged from our collective consciousness.
Right now, a generation-spanning pipeline of technocratic billionaires is using social media, artificial intelligence, and deep-state tracking infrastructure to build a post-democratic reality. It is a calculated system designed to keep us trapped in a digital loop of consumption while they systematically consume the physical resources of the planet to power their machine.
In Part 2 of The Extractive Tapestry Series, we are mapping the timeline of how psychological data-harvesting became physical resource extraction, and naming the architects behind the digital panopticon.

The Ideological Blueprint: Foucault & The Panopticon
To understand how modern social media platforms control human behavior, we have to look at the sociology of institutional discipline. In his foundational text, Michel Foucault outlines how structural power is maintained not through physical force, but through internalized surveillance.
This model stems from Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon—a prison design featuring a central guard tower surrounded by cells facing inward. Because inmates can never see inside the tower, they must assume they are being watched at all times, forcing them to regulate their own behavior.
Modern social media platforms operate as a digital Panopticon. By manipulating engagement algorithms, the technocrats enforce normalizing judgments, altering how we speak, think, and curate our lives based on metrics.

1. The Godfather of Capital: Peter Thiel
The timeline of the modern tech monopoly begins with the PayPal Mafia. In 2002, Peter Thiel and Elon Musk sold PayPal to eBay for $1.5 billion, creating what’s known today as the PayPal Mafia, who went forward to create a decentralized cartel that found and fund the biggest tech in the world: YouTube, LinkedIn, Tesla, and OpenAI to name a few.
Thiel’s core philosophy is deeply anti-democratic. In his 2009 treatise, he explicitly argued that democracy and capitalism are incompatible, asserting that freedom requires a single focus of authority safe from public oversight. To achieve this, Thiel has funded far-right political plants like JD Vance and built dark-money systems to replace democratic systems with corporate governance.

2. The Digital Panopticon: Mark Zuckerberg
In 2004, Peter Thiel became the very first outside investor in Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook. Whether it was the original intention or not has never been uttered publicly, Zuckerberg established absolute control over the platform, and created an engine for what we’re calling the Digital Panopticon.
This infrastructure was famously weaponized by Cambridge Analytica to hijack user data profiles and manipulate the 2016 US Presidential election. Despite a performative 5 billion government fine, Meta continued to scale its data-harvesting apparatus. Today, Zuckerberg is pivoting to Orion AR glasses to overlay the internet onto physical reality, turning human presence into passive data mining.

The First Sustainability Blockade
While Meta publicizes its “Net Zero” and “Water Positive” initiatives, the platform has systematically banned, flagged, or demonetized independent advertisements containing the word “sustainability” since 2019. By treating planetary preservation as a volatile “political topic,” the platform devalues anti-capitalist messaging to protect infinite material growth.
3. Alex Karp (Palantir)
In 2003, Peter Thiel co-founded Palantir alongside CEO Alex Karp to weaponize PayPal’s fraud-detection software for state intelligence operations. Palantir aggregates public, private, and healthcare data into centralized, unmonitored repositories.
Palantir’s tracking software is currently used directly by ICE to coordinate mass deportations. Furthermore, investigative reports revealed that the Trump administration awarded Palantir millions to passively spy on federal employees at the USDA, Social Security Administration, and Veterans Affairs to track workforce behavior.

4. Marc Andreessen
Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen sits on the board of Meta and acts as the chief philosophical architect for Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). His firm, a16z, manages a portfolio spanning everything from weaponized AI to biomanufacturing firms aimed at achieving technological singularity (including Asimov, Genesis, and Tessera).
In his Techno-Optimist Manifesto, Andreessen directly names “sustainability,” “ESG,” “social responsibility,” and “de-growth” as the primary enemies of human evolution. He advocates for a 1,000x surge in energy consumption, providing moral cover for tech conglomerates to revive offline fossil fuel systems and bypass environmental review processes.

5. Elon Musk
Elon Musk’s position within the autocracy is centered around total physical and orbital infrastructure monopoly. Through SpaceX, Musk has launched over 11,000 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit, with pending FCC requests for one million more, aiming to move data center processing entirely out of the reach of terrestrial environmental regulations.
Musk operates on a sci-fi doctrine: he co-founded OpenAI and Neuralink under the premise that human brains must fuse with machines to survive superintelligent AI. Believing that public networks are “infected” with anti-capitalist ideas like labor organization and environmental review. Instead of the same approach as Thiel, Musk uses government systems to his advantage, like becoming the head of DOGE and making way for the use of Palantir across systems.

Sam Altman serves as the institutional representative for massive resource extraction. OpenAI’s frantic infrastructure expansion has driven unprecedented energy demands, forcing deals for nuclear power and the aggressive deregulation of local power grids.

The May 2026 Update
The technocrats claim their technology exists in a sterile digital cloud, but it is actively consuming the real-world. To feed the massive compute needs of his xAI “Colossus” supercomputer cluster in South Memphis—a historically marginalized community—Elon Musk trucked in 46 unpermitted, illegal methane gas turbines, bypassing environmental review and pumping hazardous formaldehyde into local neighborhoods.
The ultimate systemic trap was revealed when Anthropic, the creators of the AI Claude—which was explicitly marketed as the ethical, public-benefit alternative to OpenAI—completely abandoned its platform guardrails. Driven by the frantic race for power infrastructure, Anthropic signed a multi-billion-dollar deal to lease Musk’s unpermitted, methane-burning Colossus supercomputer.

We cannot un-mine the silicon, but we can refuse to be passive data points in an extractive autocracy.
- Halt the Compute Cartels: Show up to local municipal zoning boards and demand strict environmental moratoriums on data center construction. Support organizations like the NAACP and Earthjustice who are taking tech conglomerates to federal court for violating the Clean Air Act.
- Starve the Panopticon: Treat digital compute like a physical utility. Every automated image generation and trivial chatbot query pulls real-world gallons of water and puffs of carbon from local resources. Use tools like offsetAI to quantify your digital footprint, and stop curating your thoughts to feed their engagement loops.
- Choose the Dirt Over the Screen: The ultimate act of structural rebellion is to step away from the digital overlay. Expand your backyard pond, repair what you own, buy directly from local farmers, and fiercely protect the living biodiversity of your local ecosystem.
