Sustainability isn’t just about what you buy; it’s about who has the power to decide what is legal.
Right now, a parasitic hierarchy of gatekeepers is using the mask of national security and economic growth to justify the dismantling of our environmental protections.
In this kickoff to our new series, The Extractive Tapestry, we are moving past the “unnamed industries” and naming the specific individuals who are modeling waste and destruction from the very top.

Private Jets Vs Commercial Resources
I see a lot of rhetoric in the world about private jets, so I found some real information. Yep. They’re a problem:

- Analysis from Transport & Environment found that private flights are five to 14 times more polluting than commercial planes per passenger, and 50 times more polluting than trains. Despite this, private jet emissions have increased by 46 per cent between 2019 and 2023.

The Gatekeepers of May 2026
We’re here to name names.
The Executive Waste: Kash Patel (FBI Director)
While civil servants are historically meant to maintain a level of privacy for security, FBI Director Kash Patel has turned a position of national security into a personal branding exercise. Between his “Ka$h” branded Woodford Reserve bourbon gifts and the use of DOJ aircraft for personal trips to the Milan Olympics, Patel is the face of taxpayer-funded waste. When leaders treat public resources like a private party, they signal to society that accountability is optional.

The EPA Dismantler: Lee Zeldin (AKA Sleezy LeeZee)
Administrator Lee Zeldin has officially signaled a shift in the mission of the Environmental Protection Agency. By claiming he “serves at the pleasure of the President” rather than the American people, Zeldin is stripping the legal foundation required to regulate emissions. His rhetoric—labeling climate advocates as a “cult”—is a deliberate attempt to polarize and divide.

The Legislative Betrayal: Pete Stauber & The Watershed Bill
In April 2026, the House and Senate passed H.J. Res. 140, a bill sponsored by Minnesota Representative Pete Stauber. This law seeks to overturn critical mining bans in the Superior National Forest, threatening the Great Lakes watershed. Stauber’s reliance on oil and gas PAC funding highlights the “pay-to-play” nature of our current legislative branch.

The Immunity Shield: The Stop Climate Shakedowns Act Introduced by Senator Ted Cruz and Rep. Harriet Hageman
This bill seeks to grant the fossil fuel industry permanent legal immunity from climate-related lawsuits. It is the ultimate gatekeeping move: legalizing the destruction of the planet while removing the public’s right to seek damages.

Take Action Against The Extractive Tapestry
We cannot wait for the Gatekeepers to change. Here’s how you can make a difference to change the parasitic hierarchy we’re living with.
- Do your research. Look at the laws and regulations in your local and state government. Understand who the players are and where their campaign funds come from. Because remember, they earned your trust, but they used someone’s money to do it.
- Reach out to your representatives. Remind them that they represent you and what you care about.
- Vote. Vote with your dollars, vote with your ballots, and vote with your conversations. I can’t stress this enough. These people the ones I just talked about, who are using your trust against you. They’re in office because we put them there. The lobbyists who paid for their campaigns have money because we give them ours. And the people who still support them blindly are victims of group think and it’s up to us to impart critical thinking wherever we can. Because YOU are one of the seven people in your network’s network. You can make the difference.
