The Art of UnTrashing: How Clean Something For Nothing Removed 910,000kg of Trash

When we throw something “away,” we often forget that away isn’t a magical void—it’s just out of sight for us but very much in sight for the planet. On this episode of EnvironMental with Dandelion, Aub sits down with César González Fernández, founder of Clean Something For Nothing (CSFN), to discuss how his global community has turned simple individual actions into a massive untrashing movement.

Since its inception in 2018, the CSFN community has logged over 8,000 cleanups across 84 countries, removing more than 910,000 kilograms of trash from nature. What started as a solo 10-minute cleanup during a dog walk has evolved into a high-tech ecosystem for environmental restoration.

The CSFN App: Your Toolkit for Untrashing

The core of this movement is a self-funded mobile app designed to track, share, and celebrate the process of cleaning the planet one bag at a time. It serves as a vital resource for anyone ready to “level up” their environmental impact.

  • Interactive Global Map: Users can access a worldwide map to find existing cleanups in their neighborhood or see where impact is needed most.
  • The “Squad” Feature: You can create or join local groups to clean your community together. The app acts as an “umbrella,” capturing the total weight collected by every member of the group.
  • Verified Impact Data: Every cleanup logged includes photos, timestamps, and GPS coordinates. This data is fully transparent and available for anyone to view—never sold to third parties.

Restoring Beauty Through “Pick and Plant”

Beyond just removing waste, CSFN has created a dual-impact program called Pick and Plant. To incentivize the community and offer DOUBLE the impact, CSFN matches every kilo of trash collected with one native tree planted. Funded by companies looking for verifiable results, this program provides satellite data to track the life expectancy of every tree planted.

Empowering Local Policy

One of the most powerful resources CSFN offers is a dedicated program for municipalities. This infrastructure allows citizens to directly alert their local government about big piles of trash through the app, turning residents into active stewards of their local environment. By providing hard data, the app helps community groups advocate for better policy changes at the grassroots level.

Get Involved

You don’t have to be a perfect environmentalist to make a difference. According to data shared by César, if every person on Earth collected just 2.2 kilos of trash per year, the planet would be free of wild trash.
